Carbondale Begins Downtown Revitalization Project

THE CITY OF CARBONDALE BEGINS DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION PROJECT

CARBONDALE – After months of discussion, plans to revitalize downtown Carbondale are finally underway.

Ameren Illinois is starting to set new poles behind businesses along S. Illinois Avenue as part of the first phase of the streetscape project.

Power line relocation is expected to take 4-6 weeks to complete.

In addition, there will be changes coming to sidewalks and curbs as well as the addition of plants and flowers throughout the downtown area.

The first phase of renovations will cover W. Mill Street to W. Cherry Street.

Carbondale Named Bicycle Friendly Business

CARBONDALE – The League of American Bicyclists has named the Carbondale Civic Center/City Hall a Bicycle Friendly Business at the Bronze level.

This award is presented only to businesses who are dedicated to encouraging a more welcoming atmosphere for bicycling employees, customers and the community.

There are currently 1,315 Bicycle Friendly Businesses in 49 states and Washington D.C.

Fire Department Hydrant Flushing

Fire Department Hydrant Flushing 

The City of Carbondale Fire Department will conduct hydrant flushing, scheduled to begin on Monday, April 10th. The work will include three crews working from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The areas where the hydrant flushing will occur are near the intersections of South Illinois and West Grand Avenues, South Oakland Avenue and West Chautauqua Street and South Wall and East Park Streets. Customers may notice a change in water pressure and possible discoloration. The water is safe to drink. However, if your water is discolored, wait a few hours before doing laundry. If you have water related questions, please call 457-3240.

Daily updates for locations of flushing will be available on City Vision Channel 16 and the City’s web site at www.explorecarbondale.com

Carbondale Receives Financial Excellence Award

THE CITY OF CARBONDALE RECOGNIZED WITH FINANCIAL EXCELLENCE AWARD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

 

CARBONDALE – The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the City of Carbondale the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the City’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for fiscal year 2016.

Individual departments or agencies are responsible for meeting the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) requirements for CAFR.

This is the 24th consecutive year the City has received the award.

A certificate and plaque will be presented to City Council on Tuesday, April 11 at 7 p.m.

Residential Spring Clean-Up Begins May 5th, 2017

The City of Carbondale will conduct the annual Residential Spring Clean-Up Program beginning May 5th, 2017. This program serves single family dwellings up to and including 4-unit buildings. The Spring Clean-Up Program allows residents to dispose of household items and general rubbish generated from the dwelling being served.

To participate in this program, place your household rubbish at the curbside no earlier than five (5) days prior to your collection day and no later than 8:00 a.m. on your collection day (please note that items set at the curbside for collection after 8:00 a.m. on the listed collection day will not be collected). Household items will be collected from the curbside on Fridays, based on the following schedule:

Monday's City Refuse Collection Route – Friday, May 5th

All residences east of the Canadian National (CN) railroad tracks.

Tuesday's City Refuse Collection Route - Friday, May 12th

All residences located east of Little Crab Orchard Creek and west of South Oakland Avenue and all residents south of West Main St. up to and including Chautauqua Street (excluding residences along South Oakland Ave.)

Wednesday's City Refuse Collection Route - Friday May 19th

All residences located west of the CN railroad tracks, from South Oakland Avenue east and from West Main Street south.  And all residences from West Main Street north and North Oakland Avenue east, up to and including West Sycamore Street as well as residences on North Baine Drive; All residents west of the CNRR tracks, east of Little Crab Orchard Creek and south of West Chautauqua Street (excluding residences on Chautauqua St.)

Thursday's City Refuse Collection Route - Friday, May 26th

All residences west of the CN railroad tracks, north of West Sycamore Street (excluding residences located along West Sycamore St. and North Baine Dr.) and all residences west of Little Crab Orchard Creek.

 

The following items will NOT be collected as a part of this program:

  •  Electronics such as computers and computer accessories; televisions and TV accessories; MP3 and IPOD players.
  • Tires, appliances, or yard waste - these items can be disposed of by the City's Landscape & Special Waste Sticker Program.
  • Hazardous materials including paint, oil, gasoline, car batteries, pesticides, and other chemicals. Note that many of these items may be disposed of through a Household Chemical Collection Event by the Jackson County Health Department to take place on an announced Saturday in May at the SIU Arena Parking lot for Jackson County residents only.  For more information check the Jackson County Health Department’s website at www.recyclejacksoncounty.org.
  • Contractor's remodeling or construction debris - residents or contractors must dispose of these items using private haulers.

 Please be sure not to block sidewalks, streets, ditches or drainage ways with your items. Also placing items and/or allowing items to remain at the curbside earlier than 5 days prior to or after 8:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day is a violation of City Code and may subject you to a citation. CARBONDALE – With vacation season right around the corner, the City of Carbondale wants to remind residents about new regulations for Vacation Rental Units.

The ordinance, passed by City Council in December, requires residents to obtain a license through the City’s Development Services Department when transient guests are staying at a Vacation Rental Unit for less than 30 consecutive days.

Some of these units are being listed on popular websites like Airbnb, Vacation Rentals by Owner and HomeAway.com.

Network Company Driver Applications Available

TRANSPORTATION NETWORK COMPANY DRIVER APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE IN CLERK’S OFFICE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE – Individuals looking to drive for a transportation network company (TNC) in Carbondale can now pick up an application in the City Clerk’s Office.

Applicants must provide a copy of their Illinois driver’s license, proof of insurance coverage meeting the state requirements outlined in 625 ILCS 57/1 et seq. and pay $45 for a criminal history check.

In addition, a vehicle safety inspection form signed by a City-certified ASE-approved mechanic must be submitted at the time of application. A registry of approved ASE-certified mechanics is available in the Clerk’s Office.

Once those requirements have been met, the City Clerk will issue qualified drivers a TNC license and a vehicle sticker valid through the end of the year. Both items must be present in the vehicle at all times.

CARBONDALE TO HOST ECLIPSE BUSINESS FORUMS

THE CITY OF CARBONDALE TO HOST ECLIPSE BUSINESS FORUMS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale is teaming up with Carbondale Tourism, Carbondale Main Street and the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce to host a series of eclipse forums for area businesses.

The forums will be held on Monday, March 27 and Thursday, March 30 from 2-3:30 p.m. in Room 116 of the Carbondale Civic Center. Both forums will cover the same information, so attendance at both is not required.

Topics of discussion include business preparations, parking and transportation, getting around town, volunteering and vendor opportunities.

The total solar eclipse will reach its greatest point of totality just south of Carbondale on August 21.

City of Carbondale Release New Water Bill Format

THE CITY OF CARBONDALE INTRODUCES NEW WATER BILL FORMAT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE – The next time a Carbondale resident receives a water bill in the mail, it may look a little different.

Water bills will now come in a letter format, folded and in a sealed envelope as opposed to the old postcard format. Customers will receive a pre-addressed envelope with their bill. However, a stamp will still be required.

The City hopes the new format will help cut down on a number of delivery issues.

Payments can still be made at City Hall, online at www.explorecarbondale.com, by mail or at select area banks (First Southern Bank, First Bank, First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust and The Bank of Carbondale).
