Mayor Joel Fritzler Biography

Joel Fritzler

Joel Fritzler was elected as Mayor of Carbondale in April 2011 after having served for six years as a Carbondale City Councilman.

He and his wife, Julie, have been Carbondale residents since 1996.  While Joel served as the first director of Carbondale Main Street, Julie earned her Masters of Social Work at SIU and is currently the director of a post-adoption program. Joel earned his MS in Rural Community Development from Illinois State.

Joel is originally from Indiana but spent 20 years in Oregon.  After working for 10 years in retail sales, construction, and for his father’s accounting firm, he spent two and a half years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Botswana. He then worked for the UNHCR in Malawi where he learned of ISU’s fellowship program in Community Development. Since 2002, Joel has worked for SIU; first with the Office of Economic and Regional Development and currently with the Office of Sponsored Projects.

Joel has served as President of Carbondale United Way, Treasurer of the Southern IL Adult Soccer League, a member of the City’s Sustainability and Planning Commissions, and as a board member for the Red Cross and the Southern IL Irish Festival. He was also selected in 2006 by the National League of Cities and the American Council on Germany to be a McCloy Fellow in Urban Affairs.
